"What Mayo Means to Me!"
By Conor Cannon, Age 12, Murrisk N.S
I love Mayo because there are fabulous beaches here. One of the most beautiful villages in mayo is Murrisk. Whenever there is a clear blue sky, you have a perfect view of Croagh Patrick.
Because of all the tourists that come to Mayo, it has brought a lot of money and jobs to the county. There are a load of things to do in Mayo, like to go for a walk on the beach and look at the beautiful scenery around the place.
Restaurants get a lot of money because the tourists are always hungry after they have done their viewing of the area. In Murrisk, where Iâm from, the cafĂ© and pubs do well because whenever there is a good day, a lot of people climb Croagh Patrick and once they have finished it they have the choice to pop into the cafĂ© and get a cup of tea or a coffee or else they can go to Campbellâs or the Tavern.
Westport won âThe Irish Times Best Place to Live in Irelandâ Reward in 2012. There are a load of sports that you can do in Westport. Westport won the AIB All Ireland intermediate final in 2017. They won the game narrowly by 1 point against St Colmcilles [Meath]. Mayo is also outstanding in the GAA and we get to an all-Ireland final most years.
Westport cinema was shut down for a while but thankfully they have started the W cinema up again because it was a pain going over to Castlebar cinema.
St Patrickâs Day is coming; it is just around the corner. This year St Patricks is on a Sunday the 17th of March. It is great craic because on the 18th of March everybody gets a day off school. You get to meet up with the boys on St Patrickâs Day and look at the parade that would be going on.
There are 365 islands on clew bay. It is said that there is an island for every single day of the year. Clare Island is also a really small island that has approximately 145 people living on it at the moment. Clare Island was the home of Grainne O Malley. Southwest of Clare Island is Inishturk and that has around 58 people living there. Achill Island lies off Mayo on the west coast of Ireland.
Westport senior team are also very good, they won the FAI junior cup winners when they won 2-0 against Waterford Crystal. Westport made a new pitch in 2016 called United Park. In 2013 Westport started on a new site located just beside Westport house.
Thatâs what Mayo means to me.
